Metro Manila (CNN Philippines) - Michael Cassel Group in association with Disney Theatrical Productions announces the first international tour of Disney's The Lion King, to premiere in Manila in March 2018.
Based on the animated film of the same name, this marks the musical's 20th anniversary on stage and the title's 25th global production, with additional engagements in Singapore, Korea, Taiwan and South Africa.
"We're proud to partner with our long-time friend Michael Cassel to bring the world renowned stage production of The Lion King to these vibrant cities," said Disney Theatrical Productions president and producer Thomas Schumacher.
More than 90 million people have seen the theater production since its Broadway premiere on November 13, 1997.
The Lion King is on nine productions running simultaneously worldwide: Broadway, London's West End, Hamburg, Tokyo, Madrid, Mexico City, Shanghai, Scheveningen and a North America tour.
Featuring a Broadway score from the classic songs of Elton John and Tim Rice, The Lion King has earned six Tony awards and more than 70 major arts awards including a Grammy.
Julie Taymor, the show's director, costume and mask co-designer found it wonderful that the Asia-Africa tour will witness the performance.
"Asia is a big part of my life, having spent four years in Indonesia and travelled throughout many countries in the region. It is thrilling to bring this production back to a part of the world that has been a major inspiration in my life," Taymor said.
Auditions for the international tour start on March 2017 in South Africa.
Tickets for the production are expected to go on-sale as early as October 2017.
