WATCH: Trailer for Cannes Palme d'Or contender tearjerker 'Okja'

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, May 19) — Prepare to be moved by the tale of an unlikely friendship, which successfully merges action-adventure thriller and the fairytale genre.

The film "Okja" follows Mija (An Seo Hyun), a young girl who must risk everything to stop a powerful, multinational company from kidnapping her best friend — a massive animal named Okja.

Mija sets out on a rescue mission, but her already daunting journey quickly becomes a lot more complicated when she crosses paths with disparate groups of capitalists and consumers.

The film directed by Bong Joon Ho stars Hollywood's biggest names, such as Tilda Swinton, Jake Gyllenhaal, Giancarlo Esposito, Lily Collins, and Steven Yeun.

"Okja," along with 18 other raved films, is in the running for the 70th Cannes Festival Palme d'Or — the highest prize awarded. The winner will be announced on May 28.

The trailer was released on Thursday.

"Okja" will premiere worldwide on Netflix on June 28.
