'Heneral Luna' sequel 'Goyo' reveals release date

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, May 2) - The upcoming sequel to the 2015 historical-action biopic "Heneral Luna" is set to show in local cinemas beginning September 5.

"Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral," stars Paulo Avelino as the titular Gregorio del Pilar, also known as "Goyo."  Goyo is the youngest general in the Philippine Revolution and the Philippine-American war. He died in 1899 at 24 years old.

TBA Studios has also released a new trailer for the much-awaited film, featuring Goyo and love interest Remedios Nable Jose, played by Gwen Zamora.


Avelino played del Pilar  in "Heneral Luna" alongside fellow actors Mon Confiado, Epy Quizon Benjamin Alves, and Leo Martinez. The film garnered ?200 million, making it the highest-grossing historical film in the country.

The actor revealed to CNN Philippines in December last year that the role of "Goyo" is one of the most powerful roles he's ever played. Avelino added that he was required to lose weight, get a tan, and train in horseback riding.

He also shared that the film aims to shed more light about the country's history as it delves deeper into Del Pilar's story.

""['Goyo'] would bring up a lot of questions about our history, what happened during that era, who's right or who's wrong," Avelino said in an interview with CNN Philippines Life.

Goyo's official Facebook page confirmed the making of the movie back in 2015.
