Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, May 18) — Actress Heart Evangelista revealed Thursday she was supposed to have twins but lost the other baby in the first trimester of her pregnancy.

Evangelista posted an Instagram photo of her sonogram from her first ultrasound session, showing two embryos, with one much larger than the other.

"Unfortunately one of the embryos was smaller and behind in terms of development and so we lost one of the twins," the photo's caption read.

During our first ultrasound we were a mixture of excitement and nervous but nothing could prepare us for what we would learn. We found out that I had a TWIN PREGNANCY. My sister has twins but I never imagined that I would be able to have twins as well. Unfortunately one of the embryos was smaller and behind in terms of development and so we lost one of the twins. Our hearts were heavy at the thought but we knew we had to focus on the good. This is the first photo of the twins where you can see the other embryo who is healthy and showing more positive signs of development. If there’s one thing I’ve learned about Motherhood this early on it’s that it won’t always be sunshine and butterflies, sometimes there will be cloudy moments. But it’s these ups and downs that I know will make me a stronger Mom. We now have a little angel up there and I trust that God is with us on this beautiful journey. I have to thank my wonderful husband who really has been my partner through it all. There is no one else I would rather do this with...(Some of these things happened weeks ago way before we announced, I’m just sharing this now.)

She remained optimistic however, and said the tragedy would make her stronger.

"If there's one thing I've learned about Motherhood this early on it's that it won't always be sunshine and butterflies, sometimes there will be cloudy moments. But it's these ups and downs that I know will make me a stronger Mom," she said.

She now calls her lost baby, her "angel" and she remained grateful for her husband's support.

"We now have a little angel up there and I trust that God is with us on this beautiful journey. I have to thank my wonderful husband who really has been my partner through it all," the actress said.

Evangelista announced her pregnancy Saturday, on the eve of Mother's Day.

This is her first pregnancy with husband Senator Chiz Escudero. They got married in 2015 in a private ceremony on Balesin island, Quezon.

Escudero was formerly married to singer Christine Elizabeth Flores, and they had twins before separating in 2011.
