Manila (CNN Philippines Life) — Many would agree that SM is the unofficial national mall of the Philippines, especially since, in one way or another, SM malls have been part of the milestones in the lives of many Filipino families.

What started as a modest shoe store in Manila has now expanded to 70 malls across the country. In its 60 years of existence, SM Supermalls have accumulated a daily shopper count of 3.5 million nationwide, which is larger than the populations of Slovenia, Luxembourg, the Bahamas, and Tonga combined. The malls have not only been venues for eating and shopping, it has also serviced other industries, such as the sports sector that hold various competitions and events at the SM Mall of Asia Arena and SM’s skating rinks.

SM has also reached milestones of their own — from hosting international superstars like Justin Bieber and Miley Cyrus to organizing annual firework shows that could compete with the shows at Liuyang, China, the fireworks capital of the world.

To celebrate all of these victories and hallmarks, SM is set to offer deals and promos that mark its 60 anniversary, where mall-goers can expect paying only ₱60, or paying ₱60 less, or paying only 60 percent, among many others.

#AweSM Weekend Party at SM Megamall

“SM started from a dream of a 12-year-old Mr. Henry Sy, Sr., who sought a better life for himself, for his family, and for his little community,” said Christian Mathay, SM’s AVP for operations, during the “Sweet 60” celebration at SM Megamall on Friday, May 25.

The dessert-themed, kick-off party was replete with interactive play areas — from a pink blow up playhouse to an inflatable pool filled with balls. This #AweSM weekend party was also host to pop-up stores by Fruits in Ice Cream and The Lost Bread, installations by The Dessert Museum, and a painting station by Boysen.

Guests were also entertained with a cheer dance performance of the #AweSM wave by the NU Pep Squad, while SM Woman Divas Frenchie Dy, Radha, and Bituin Escalante wowed the crowd with their majestic voices. Ramonne Rodriguez of "The Voice" and SM Little Stars Annastacia Penny also joined in on the show, singing the classic SM “We’ve Got It All” jingle. There was also a giant logo projection mapping at SM Megamall’s façade along EDSA.

From a small store in Carriedo, Manila to being one of the biggest integrated property developers in Southeast Asia — SM’s founder has indeed made his dreams a reality, an inspiring tale of grit and hard work that is coupled with unrelenting vision and purpose.

“It is our history that we are celebrating. We are celebrating our future as well,” added Mathay. “We stand here looking into a journey ahead, pushing our founder's dream further into the future and we're excited for what is in store.”
