Manila (CNN Philippines Life) — Since the Netflix show “Tidying Up with Marie Kondo” premiered on the first day of 2019, viewers all over the globe started to plunge into their own closets, cupboards, and corners to declutter.

In the Philippines, decluttering consultant Claudine Gamboa has already been using Kondo’s famed KonMari method since 2017 after being introduced to Kondo’s book, “Spark Joy.”

“I did some research, I went to Konmari.com and I saw that there was a consultant's portal where you can click and research about seminars that are coming up for consultants to be credited,” she says.

She then did a three-day seminar and became a certified KonMari consultant. She shares that for every client, the first questions she asks them are: “What do you want to achieve after decluttering? What is the lifestyle you see yourself living after decluttering?”

For Gamboa, decluttering is more than just cleaning up and making neat spaces; it’s also a lesson on letting go — not only of things, but also of beliefs that may hinder one’s moving forward. “You are confronting yourself by confronting your mess,” she says.
