Manila (CNN Philippines Life) — For the 2018 edition of the annual Ateneo Art Awards, a total of 89 nominations were sent by Filipino artists, curators, gallery and museum directors, art critics, and art educators for the visual art prizes. Artists under 36 years old with an exhibit from May 2, 2017 to May 2, 2018 are qualified for the nominations.

Out of the 12 shortlisted artists, only three will receive the prizes (named after the gallery’s first benefactor Fernando Zóbel), which include international residency grants from the Ateneo Art Gallery’s partner institutions: La Trobe Art Institute in Australia, Artesan Gallery + Studio in Singapore, and Liverpool Hope University in the United Kingdom.

This year, the Embassy of Italy will also be giving away the Embassy of Italy Purchase Prize among the 12 shortlisted artists.

The shortlisted artists are:

  • Mars Bugaoan - “Becoming” (ArtInformal)
  • Bea Camacho - “Memento Obliviscere” (MO_Space)
  • Ronson Culibrina - “Talim” (Blanc Gallery)
  • Dina Gadia - “Situation Amongst the Furnishings” (Silverlens)
  • Johanna Helmuth - “Makeshift” (Blanc Gallery)
  • Ian Carlo Jaucian - “Viral Automata” (1335 Mabini)
  • KoloWn - “Low Pressured Area” (Cultural Center of the Philippines)
  • Robert Langenegger - “Only Dog Can Judge Me” (MO_Space)
  • Issay Rodriguez - “…” (Silverlens)
  • Ciron Señeres - “Gray Horizon” (Cultural Center of the Philippines)
  • Jel Suarez - “Traces by Which We Remember” (West Gallery)
  • Elias Miles Villanueva - “What’s Left of It” (Pinto Art Museum)

The Purita Kalaw-Ledesma Prizes in Art Criticism also has an additional prize this year. Aside from a regular art column in The Philippine Star and contributions in ArtAsiaPacific Magazine, the Embassy of Spain, and Instituto Cervantes, two winners will contribute to the eighth edition of their arts and culture publication Perro Berde.

The art criticism prize this year has six shortlisted writers and a special citation:

  • Alec Madelene Abarro - “An Organized Chaos: Navigating the Looban” (On the “Urban Labyrinth” exhibit at the Ayala Museum)
  • Juan Paolo Colet - “Life in the Labyrinth” (On the “Urban Labyrinth” exhibit at the Ayala Museum)
  • Jayvee Del Rosario - “Ossifying the Abstract” (On the “Alfonso Ossorio: A Survey 1940-1989” exhibit at the Ayala Museum)
  • Mary Jessel Duque - “Pacita Abad: A Million Times a Woman, an Artist” (On the “Pacita Abad: A Million Things to Say” exhibit at the Museum of Contemporary Art and Design)
  • Sabrina Jeongco - “Pacita Abad Has a Million Things to Say” (On the “Pacita Abad: A Million Things to Say” exhibit at the Museum of Contemporary Art and Design)
  • Jose Carlos Joaquin Singson - “Bread and Circuses in Time Roiling and Churning” (On the “Vic Delotavo: Posters for Philippine Cinema” exhibit at the Vargas Museum)

Special citation:

  • Maria Lourdes Garcellano - “Sinehan sa Isang Museo” (On the “Vic Delotavo: Posters for Philippine Cinema” exhibit at the Vargas Museum)

An online site, “Vital Points: Essays from the Purita Kalaw-Ledesma Prizes in Art Criticism,” will also be launched for the shortlisted entries from this year up to 2014.

The awarding of the prizes will be on August 26 at the Arts Wing of Areté at the Ateneo de Manila University.

The Ateneo Art Awards 2018 exhibit will run from July 18 to July 30, 2018 at The Grand Atrium, Shangri-la Plaza. From August 10 to November 4, the exhibit will be at the Ateneo Art Gallery.
