Manila (CNN Philippines Life) — This weekend, celebrate the largest art deco theater in the country, shop at a pop-up Christmas market, check out furniture made from scrap and waste, join an auction of antiques and collectibles, meet an artist who uses stainless steel for her pieces, tell “strange” stories, and attend the launch of a book about the war on drugs.

Shelf Life by Resurrection Furniture

Resurrection Furniture and Found Objects Gallery will showcase their items in an event called “Shelf Life,” from Dec. 8 to Dec. 15 at Pineapple Lab. The furniture store and gallery, founded by Binggoy de Ocampo and Leah Sanchez in 2009, is known to turn scrap or waste into household items or artwork, after seeing how many objects were left ‘unusable’ after Typhoon Ondoy.

Dekada Collectibles 15th Anniversary Auction

Dekada Collectibles and Antique Shop, also known as Filipino Pickers, is an e-commerce platform that buys, swaps, and sells memorabilia, antiques, and collectibles online. The group has been gathering coins, music records, and antiques, among many others, from across the Philippines, particularly in houses that are about to be demolished, as well as in back roads of provinces. For their 15th anniversary on Dec. 9, the group will be holding an auction of their collectibles at the Ortigas Foundation Library.

MET meets MET

The Metropolitan Museum of Manila will celebrate the 86th year of the Manila Metropolitan Theater, the largest art deco theater in the country, on Saturday, Dec. 9, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. As a way to honor the architect behind the historic theater, there will be a guided tour of the “Framing the Spectacle of Space: Juan Arellano, Architect-Painter” exhibition. After the festivities at the museum, guests will be ushered to the theater, and they will be coursed through the restoration projects that are being done to the building.

Sound Thrift: The Future Christmas Market!

Do your holiday shopping at The Future Christmas Market on Saturday, Dec. 9 at Today x Future. Conversations in Art with Allison Wong David

Ayala Museum’s latest exhibition called “Space” features the pieces of artist Allison Wong David who uses stainless steel for her works. The exhibit opened on Nov. 21, 2017 and runs until Jan. 18, 2018. On Saturday, Dec. 9, get to know David and ask questions about her creative processes at the Ayala Museum.

Word of Mouth: Unscripted Stories on Strangers

Conversations of Us, a community that share stories through artworks and letters, Tweedle Book Cafe, a coffee shop replete with books, and Hulma collab, a group that aims to bring arts and culture closer to communities, will host a gathering of “lovers of books, stories, and letters” on Dec. 9 at the Tweedle Book Cafe. The get-together will circle around the theme “Strangers,” and attendees are encouraged to share stories or letters about the theme.

Book launching of "Human Costs of the Philippine War on Drugs"

The National Association of Social Work Education, Inc. (NASWEI) will launch a book titled “Human Costs of the Philippine War on Drugs” on Sunday, Dec. 10, 9 a.m. at the University Hotel. The book, supported by Universalist Unitarian Service Committee, includes 19 case studies of the victims of extrajudicial killings. The stories are penned by faculty members of 9 different NASWEI universities, as the project also encourages academics to use it as a way to “deepen critical thinking of students and hone their beginning skills in advocacy.”
