Manila (CNN Philippines Life) — On the first weekend of the new year, learn about the creative process behind independent publishing, improve your doodle skills, catch a film by an acclaimed indie director, join a night of music, spoken word, and mental health talk, and enjoy a relaxing afternoon meditating around art.

Doodle Fest 2017: Doodle Sessions

On Saturday, Jan. 6, from 2 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., doodle to your heart’s content as Doodle Fest closes with Doodle Sessions, a day of creative activities centered on improving one’s art by taking advantage of one’s “swift judgment, creativity, and interpretation of various ideas.” This Doodle Session is facilitated by the head of Doodle Art Enthusiasts, Lei Melendres.

At 4 p.m., participants will also be treated to a Doodle Clash Battle between independent visual duo CH / CH, and freelance illustrator and muralist, Meowinism, and his partner, Qwark, whose style spans from surrealism to sci-fi and steampunk. The “clash” is a 100-minute tag team doodling face-off using black markers on a 3x6 ft. panel.

“How to Disappear Completely” (Special Screening)

Smaller and Smaller Circles” director Raya Martin is Cinema Centenario’s Filmmaker in Focus for the month of January. Martin’s filmography is extensive, with a number of critically lauded and award-winning films under his belt, such as “Independencia,” which premiered at the Cannes’ Un Certain Regard section in 2009, and “La Ultima Pelicula,” co-directed by Mark Peranson, which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival in 2013.

On Friday, Jan. 5, 10 p.m., the cinematheque will screen Martin’s “How to Disappear Completely,” followed by a Q&A with the director. The theater will also be screening “Independencia” later in the month.

Kicking off its 12-part series of open discussions on the creative process, Proseso is hosting forum number one, Independent Publishing, a free-for-all talk on independent print publication at Dulo on Saturday, Jan. 6, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., with PURVEYR and TEAM Magazine as guests.

One Night Stand 2: A Mental Health Benefit Gig

Switch up your usual gig-going with a night of music, art, spoken word, and talks on mental health. One Night Stand 2 is a fundraising event hosted by Anxiety and Depression Support Philippines, a volunteer-run online support group for people battling with mental health issues.

The event is happening on Saturday, Jan. 6 at Conspiracy Garden Cafe, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Gates open at 4 p.m.
