Manila (CNN Philippines Life) — This weekend, catch the first local public screening of a critically acclaimed film, enjoy Record Store Day at a concert-slash-record fair, learn an ancient form of writing, celebrate National Literature Month at a Spanish book festival and a literary fest, attend an art auction in a creative district, check out new exhibitions at the Met, and learn how to pursue a career in art.

Dia del Libro

Dia del Libro, or “book day” in Spanish, is an annual event hosted by the Instituto Cervantes de Manila and the Embassy of Spain. The fiesta will feature a book market with thousands of books in both English and Spanish, spoken word poetry performances, a silent disco, a concert by the Manila Symphony Orchestra, book signings, a free Spanish class, and an art exhibit, among others. Attendees can expect a day filled with music, art, literature, football, and Spanish food.

Lav Diaz’s “Ang Panahon ng Halimaw

Award-winning director Lav Diaz’s latest film, “Ang Panahon ng Halimaw” is coming to UP Cine Adarna for its first public screening in the Philippines on Friday, April 20 at 5 p.m.

The film is described as a neo-noir musical about the bloodied era of the 1970s. The rock opera stars Piolo Pascual as a poet searching for his missing wife, played by Shaina Magdayao, who disappears after bringing medical aid to a town plagued by a two-faced devil.

The film premiered this year at the Berlin International Film Festival and has gone on to receive awards at film festivals worldwide.

Record Store Day Pilipinas

Record Store Day is an annual worldwide celebration of the record store and the culture around it, bringing together artists, store owners, and customers alike. Celebrate the day at UP Town Center with a record fair and live performances, organized by Offshore Music and Satchmi.

Attendees can purchase records and vintage audio gear from stores all across Manila at the fair, and catch performances by artists like Ely Buendia, The Itchyworms, The Ransom Collective, Tarsius, Ourselves the Elves, and many more.

Baybayin Writing Workshop

Celebrations for National Literature Month continue this weekend with a Baybayin writing workshop at the Book Museum cum Ethnology Center. Participants will get to learn how to write the ancient script, as well as take a guided tour of the museum complex.

AUTHORities: The 9th Philippine International Literary Festival

One more literary festival awaits book lovers this weekend at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP). The Philippine International Literary Festival is holding its 9th cycle on Thursday, April 19 and Friday, April 20, with the theme “(AUTHOR)ities,” meant to underscore “ the changing meanings of authorship, narrative, and power.”

Festival-goers can expect talks, workshops, tabletop game demos, film screenings, performances, and a book fair.

The event is open from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Entrance is free, but participants are required to bring one donated book as entrance.

“Art in Poblacion”

This Saturday, art collectors can make their way to burgeoning creative district, Poblacion, for the first “Art in Poblacion,” where over 100 works from both local and foreign artists will be up for auction at the event. The auction is presented by Harringtons Lifestyle Auction, in collaboration with avante-garde French art hub Taverne Gutenberg.

Vargas X MET Exhibitions

Two new exhibitions will be launched by the Metropolitan Museum of Manila this Saturday, April 21 at 4 p.m. In partnership with the UP Vargas Museum, the Met is launching “Fascination with Filipiniana: The Vargas Museum Collection” and “In the Wake of War and the Modern: Manila, 1941 to 1961.” The former examines the artworks and archives of the Vargas Museum collection, as well as Jorge B. Vargas’ place in the history of Philippine art and culture, while the latter explores the connection between the Vargas Museum and the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas.
