Takwil - Analog and Digital Image-making

This Friday, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., join Jose Tence Ruiz for a talk on analog and digital image-making at The Minokaua in Manila. The talk will be followed by the official opening of Ruiz’s digital art exhibition, “Takwil [Partial Download of Pixelated Anxiety],” which reflects on the condition of digital art in which it hovers in a limbo of takwil, or qualified rejection.

Ateneo Art Awards 2018 Awarding Ceremony

Find out who wins the 2018 Ateneo Art Awards this Sunday at the Suthira B Zalamea Lobby at Areté. This year, a total of 89 nominations were sent in and 12 artists were eventually shortlisted for three prizes, which include international residency grants from the Ateneo Art Gallery’s partner institutions: La Trobe Art Institute in Australia, Artesan Gallery + Studio in Singapore, and Liverpool Hope University in the United Kingdom. The Embassy of Italy will also be giving away the Embassy of Italy Purchase Prize among the 12 shortlisted artists this year. Meanwhile, six writers are shortlisted for the Purita Kalaw-Ledesma Prizes in Art Criticism.

The exhibit is on display from Aug. 10 to Nov. 4 at the Alicia P Lorenzo Gallery, Ambeth R. Ocampo Gallery, Elizabeth Gokongwei Gallery, and The Curve Gallery located at 3F Arts Wing at Arete.

Casa Natura Concept Launch

This Saturday, head to Escolta for the campaign launch of Casa Natura, the merged lifestyle shops of Gen. Mdse. and Kahilom, in collaboration with VIGI.ph. Casa Natura is set to become a house for “carefully crafted and personal-processed products aiming to convey conscientious production and collective learning.”

Marahuyo: Mental Health Awareness Event

Spend this weekend learning about mental health in the Philippines, particularly the issue of mental health among medical students, at Marahuyo, a mental health awareness event. You can expect talks, an art and photography exhibit, an art market, and a culminating performance night at this event, which will be happening this Sunday from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Young Women’s Christian Association of Manila. Tickets are priced at ₱120, with proceeds going to the Youth for Mental Health Coalition.

Art Appreciation Talks: French Impressionism

The Ayala Museum and Alliance Française de Manille are holding an art appreciation talk on French Impressionism this Saturday, from 3 p.m. onwards at the museum’s GF Lobby. Bryan Anthony Paraiso, the Supervising Historic Sites Development Officer of the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) and NHCP representative to the National Committee on Museums (NCOM) of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), will be providing an overview of the French Impressionist movement, its artists, and the experimental techniques they used.

The event’s regular rate is ₱450, ₱285 for students and teachers, and ₱321 Senior Citizens and PWDs. A ticket is inclusive of a lecture kit, free coffee by Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf, and complimentary museum admission on Aug. 25, 2018.

The Spirit of Budo: The History of Japan’s Martial Arts Exhibit

For those interested in learning about Japanese martial arts, the National Museum of the Philippines is currently displaying the international traveling exhibition, The Spirit of Budo: The History of Japan’s Martial Arts, which has original and reproductions of historical weapons such as arrows, suits of armor, helmets, and other gear, as well as photo panels of popular sports and exercises like Judo, Sumo, and Kendo.

This Aug 25., there will be a special event at the National Museum Auditorium featuring arnis demonstration and workshop with Amato Arnis Classic Combat Martial Arts Organization of the Philippines. Admission is free.

Buwan ng Chika

On Monday, celebrate Buwan Ng Wika with a discussion on bekinese/swardspeak, or in other words, gay lingo. Professor Tuting Hernandez of the U.P. Department of Linguistics will be giving a talk on the history, cultural significance, and use of bekinese.
