Manila (CNN Philippines Life) — This weekend, hunt for more reading materials at a massive book fair, attend an anniversary of a local art collective, watch a local pop punk band take on OPM classics, witness the return of an acclaimed play, make art through a feminist workshop, listen to your favorite film music come alive, and learn about the plight of peasant farmers and fisherfolks at a forum.

MSO Silver Screen Symphonies

Want to hear your favorite film’s orchestral theme played live? Prof. Arturo Molina leads the Manila Symphony Orchestra in a night of music from the movies. Featured soloists include Demie Fresco, Michael Guevarra, and Laurence Mossman. The film lineup is still under wraps but the MSO Facebook page has teased posters from “Jaws,” “The Godfather,” and “The Mask of Zorro,” plus a Hans Zimmer post.

Catch the performance at The Theater at Solaire on Sunday, Sep. 16 starting at 6 p.m.

The Theater at Solaire is located at 1 Asean Ave., Entertainment City, Parañaque.

Manila International Book Fair

The 39th Manila International Book Fair has kicked off on Sept. 12 and continues this weekend. Exhibit halls 1 to 4 and function rooms 1 to 2 at the SMX Convention Center will be filled with a wide range of book selections as well as digital publications and teaching aids. There will also be book signing events, book-related activities for bibliophiles, comics pop-ups, and meet-and-greets, among others. As part of the National Teachers Month celebrations, local teachers who will visit the event will also be greeted with gifts as soon as they enter the hall.

Tahanan - Ikatlong Taong Anibersaryo ng Sining Collective

The Sining Collective, in cooperation with Baon Collective, will host a combination of an art fair, musical concert, and a spoken word performance on Sept. 15, from 4 p.m. onwards.

The music performances include Tanya Markova, Munimuni, I belong to the zoo, Ja Quintana, Pure Quiet Mind, and Cinderblock, among others. There will also be an art performance by Paolo Dumlao as well as works by Nathaniel Estenzo, Borgy & Yna, Bjan Bernabe, Kix Navidad, Angelo Entrata, and Franchesca Franco, among many others.

OPM Classics Jam by Pineapple Lab x Hansom

Filipino band Hansom will entertain attendees with their take on classic OPM songs this Sunday, Sept. 16 at Pineapple Lab. The pop punk band, composed of the de Dios brothers, has been known to inject humor into their songwriting and performances. For this event, they will be joined by guitarist Martin Infante, who has also played with The Love Me Dudes, Drift, and Hit The Road Kat.

WAR ROOM: A forum on state attacks against rural communities

Learn about the plight of peasant farmers and fisherfolk in a forum on Sept. 15, from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. The event will start with a discussion on the increasing death toll of peasant farmers in rural communities due to land disputes in their respective regions.

After which, Pampalakaya-Pilipinas, an alliance of fisherfolk activist groups, will talk about the challenges that Filipino fishermen face and how they fight injustices perpetrated on Philippine fisheries. The event will end with a public mapping workshop that aims to visualize and organize information on state attacks on peasant farmers.

"M Butterfly" Manila

“M Butterfly” returns to the Philippine stage after 28 years, this time with a fresh new look. The play by David Henry Hwang is loosely based on the relationship between a French diplomat and a Chinese opera singer.

The 2018 Manila staging is directed by Kanakan-Balintagos and produced by Tony and Grammy award winner Jhett Tolentino.

The play will be held at the BGC Arts Center and stars RS Francisco, with Olivier Borten, Mayen Estañero, Lee O'Brian, Norman McLeod, Maya Encila and Ms. Pinky Amador.
