Metro Manila (CNN Philippines) — Long lines in evacuation centers, people panic buying, and worse — looting.
These has become a common sight during disasters.
On survival mode, the basic instinct is to stack up on the essentials. But this has to change.
Part of the government's advocacy for disaster preparedness is to have survival kits in every home.
The idea is make families more self-reliant by having the basic needs to last them for days.
People tend to see the survival kit as highly commercialized but, according to disaster and emergency management expert Martin Aguda, you can build your own.
The items could be bought whenever your household budget allows to prevent straining your finances.
CNN Philippines consulted Aguda on what items should be included inside a survival kit.
