Cayetano said if higher pay for the public sector will not be implemented immediately, the incoming administration will try to improve the government workers' benefits.

Davao City (CNN Philippines) — Could the Philippine National Police chief soon have a salary bigger than the president's?

Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano, who arrived in Davao City Friday night, said it's possible with the incoming administration's plan to double the pay of police and military personnel.

"There is a possible distortion. Meaning, 'yung ibang mga pulis mas mataas sa mga bureau directors, etc. It could be possible na mas mataas sa presidente ang chief PNP kung ganoon 'yung scale, 'no," said Cayetano, the running mate of incoming president Duterte.

While it is possible, Cayetano said he doesn't think it will actually happen.

Duterte has tasked Cayetano to study the funding source of the planned additional pay.

He said they plan to get it from what he called "free portion" of the 2017 national budget.

The budget for the succeeding year is submitted to Congress shortly after the State of the Nation Address.

Cayetano said there's about P600 billion in the proposed 2017 budget that has no specific item.

"Kung hindi naman matataas ang sweldo right away ng lahat ng nasa gobyerno, what we can do is try to put up 'yung benefits. We will be talking with the new DOH secretary and new PhilHealth president to explain kung paano siguruhin na zero billing talaga 'pag nasa gobyerno," said Cayetano.

"'Yung military is a little bit more complicated because of two things: napakalaki nung retirement at mas malaki 'yung organization."

Duterte Cabinet in Davao City

Meanwhile, lawmakers and possible members of the Duterte Cabinet are expected to go to Davao City this weekend.

In a friendly basketball game on Saturday with Duterte's executive assistant Bong Go, Cayetano said he's in Davao City to meet with some incoming Cabinet secretaries who have questions on some measures they need passed in line with respective programs.

Cayetano said a number of senators also want to meet Duterte.

However, he advised Duterte's well-wishers to give the incoming president time to settle down after the proclamation and allow him time with his Cabinet.

"I'm just saying, everyone's just texting each other and some of the senators have been wanting to see him (Duterte) from the start but in-advise ko sa kanila na baka mas magandang grupo o kaya pag naka-settle down muna o kaya give him time not only to rest but to form his Cabinet," said Cayetano.

His sister, Sen. Pia Cayetano who will soon be Taguig representative, is also in Davao City.

There are talks she was offered a Cabinet post.

Alan Cayetano said apart from senator-elect Manny Pacquiao who’s already Davao City, Migz Zubiri may also pay a visit.
