Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, June 8) — Four Philippine institutions made it to the list of top universities worldwide in 2016.

University of the Philippines (UP) ranked 374th in the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings for 201—out of 916 schools.

On the other hand, Ateneo de Manila University (AdMU) placed in the 501 to 550, while De La Salle University, and University of Santo Tomas (UST) ranked 701st, along with several other schools.

The four tertiary institutions also ranked high in Asia: UP ranked 70th, Ateneo is at 99th, DLSU at 143rd and UST at 157.

QS is a "global provider of specialist higher education and careers information and solutions." It also ranks universities by subject to help students "identify the leading universities in a particular subject."

The rankings are based on academic and employer reputation, as well as the quality of research and citations.

Three of the universities were able to get in four out of five subject classifications: Arts and Humanities, Social Sciences and Management, Engineering and Technology, and lastly, Life Sciences and Medicine.

Ateneo ranked 284th for Arts and Humanities, a little ahead of UP at 293.

For Social Science and Management, UP ranked 274 while Ateneo is at 387.

DLSU placed in the 401 to 450th in both subject areas.

On the other hand, UP, the only state university among the three, made it to the 401 to 450th place in Engineering and Technology, as well as in Life Sciences and Medicine.
