Makati police chief, 5 other officials sacked in connection with extortion

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, May 10) — Makati police chief S/Supt. Dionisio Bartolome was relieved from his post on Wednesday after four of his men were arrested for alleged extortion.

The Philippine National Police Counter Intelligence Task Force (PNP-CITF) arrested PO2 Harley Garcera, PO2 Clarence Maynes, PO1 Tim Galzote, and PO1 Jeffrey Cañete in an entrapment operation in Pasay City on Tuesday.

Their immediate supervisor, Chief Inspector Oscar Pagulayan, was also sacked.

PNP-CITF chief Jose Chiquito Malayo said the four policemen forcibly took the victim from his bike shop in Merville, Pasay City on Monday. They allegedly asked for P400,000.

The victim was released after his family paid the first P100,000 and at the same time struck a deal with the policemen to pay the balance the next day. The four policemen threatened to kill the victim's family if the balance is not paid, Malayo said.

The four policemen, all from the Makati police intelligence unit, are detained at the CITF headquarters in Camp Crame and are facing criminal and administrative charges.
