Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, May 24) — Prayers flooded social media amid reports of local terror group Maute's takeover and burning of public and private facilities in Marawi City, Tuesday afternoon.

The incident also prompted President Rodrigo Duterte to declare martial law in the whole island of Mindanao and cut his official visit in Russia.

In a press conference late Tuesday evening, Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana said the Maute group occupied several establishments in Marawi City: the Amai Pakpak Hospital the city hall and the city jail, as well as part of the Mindanao State University Compound.

Some facilities were also burned: the St. Mary's Church, the city jail, the Ninoy Aquino School, and the Dansalan College.

The hashtag #PrayforMarawi continues to be the top trending topic on Twitter Philippines as of Wednesday morning, with some netizens sharing photos of the clash.

Twitter user Haron Ar Rashid Dima posted photos of burning structures, saying it was sent to him by family and friends.

"Marawi is not okay! We are being burned down! Fire trucks are seized. #PrayForMarawi Schools, jails, and homes are left to be torched," he said.

 

Some netizens also hoped for the safety of residents.
