Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, July 2) — Tropical depression Emong has intensified into a tropical storm, the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said Sunday.

In a 2 p.m. weather advisory, PAGASA said Emong had gained strength as it "rapidly moves" towards the Ryuku Islands southwest of Japan.

PAGASA predicted moderate to occasionally heavy rainfall in areas within 450 kilometers of the Emong.

As of 1 p.m. Sunday, the storm was located at 430 km East Northeast of Basco, Batanes.

Emong packs maximum sustained winds of 65 kph near the center and a gustiness of 80 kph.

PAGASA projects it will move northwest at 30 kph and will be 695 km North Northeast of Basco, Batanes in 24 hours, and 1,585 km Northeast of Basco, Batanes in 48 hours.
