Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, August 6) The military is investigating stray bombs that fell on a town beside Marawi City at around 7a.m. Sunday.

The bombs fell near the border of Marantao, Lanao del Sur and Mindanao State University.

Marantao is 19 km from Marawi, where firefight between government forces and Maute rebels are on its 76th day.

Joint Task Force Marawi Spokesperson Jo-ann Petinglay said initial investigations indicate the explosions may have come from retaliatory fire from the Maute group.

"None of our indirect fire weapons were employed this morning; none that could possibly reach the area of impact," she said.

Petinglay said the units are investigating where the enemy fire may have come from.
