Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, December 5) — Expect President Rodrigo Duterte to conduct unannounced visits to the sick and the poor, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said on Tuesday.

Duterte surprised many shoppers when he went around a fancy mall in Makati on Monday, but unknown to many, the President's trip to the mall was only a side trip. He had come from "unannounced" visits to poor and sick people - mostly infants - confined in different hospitals.

There was no media coverage because the visits, which Roque called the President's "Christmas activity," weren't on Duterte's official schedule.

Duterte visited and handed out financial assistance to patients in Hospicio de San Jose, Fabella Hospital and Mary Johnston Hospital in Tondo, Manila.

"I wasn't even supposed to say that he visited the poor and the sick yesterday. It was supposed to be confidential and I don't know if I should even be discussing what he did yesterday, but in the interest of transparency," Roque said.

Roque said these visits are only the first of many more "unannounced" activities the President may make this Christmas season.

When the President was mayor of Davao City, he often went around hospitals, orphanages and health centers spreading Christmas cheer to children afflicted with cancer and patients in charity wards every December.

"I guess ayaw lang niya mapulaan for doing what he has traditionally done as mayor in the month of December. There are more visits and now I know it is unannounced," said Roque.
