JBC interviews candidates for SC associate justice

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, June 14) - The search is on for the next Supreme Court (SC) associate justice.

Court of Appeals Justices Oscar Badelles, Manuel Barrios, Ramon Garcia and Amy Lazaro-Javier; Davao judge Carlos Espero, and former Ateneo Law dean Cesar Villanueva faced the Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) on Thursday.

The council previously interviewed six other aspirants, including SC Court Administrator Midas Marquez.

The candidates are vying for the seat of Associate Justice Presbitero Velasco who will retire in August.

After the interviews, the JBC will come up with a shortlist to be forwarded to Malacañang.

President Rodrigo Duterte will then choose his fifth appointee from the list.

According to the SC Public Information Office, "The public may submit to the JBC a sworn complaint, report, or opposition against any of the aforesaid applicants" either through mail addressed to the SC, through telephone or email.
