Hon. Samuel Martires

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, July 26) — President Rodrigo Duterte said he has signed the appointment papers of Supreme Court Associate Justice Samuel Martires as new Ombudsman, replacing Conchita Carpio Morales who retired Wednesday.

Duterte made the revelation at an event in Zamboanga Sibugay Thursday, but did not go into details.

On July 17, Martires' peers at the Supreme Court unanimously recommended him for the post.

On July 20, the President received the short list of Ombudsman candidates nominated by the Judicial and Bar Council (JBC).

Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III, an aspirant, was dropped from the list. Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra, who also sits in the JBC, said Bello was disqualified as he has a pending syndicated estafa case at the Department of Justice.
