Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, August 10) One meeting between President Rodrigo Duterte and two competing factions of PDP-Laban is not enough to iron out issues and unify the party.

This, as the President will meet the two groups again on September 1, after their meeting at the Diamond Hotel in Manila Thursday evening.

Senator Koko Pimentel said Duterte wanted the party to be united amid its leadership struggle.

"We must focus on the party's campaign promises — federalism, the all out war against drugs and corruption, lalo na and we have to help him in federalism and the fight against corruption," Pimentel said in an interview Monday.

The senator also clarified he was still president of the party, after thousands of supposed regional party members attended the party's National Assembly at the Amoranto Stadium in Quezon City last July 27. In this assembly, Rogelio Garcia was elected as party president.

Pimentel claimed "publicly rebelling" is not the way to question party processes and leadership.

"If there's a problem, let us talk," he said.

According to former MMDA Chairperson and PDP-Laban member, Francis Tolentino, both parties talked to Duterte to air out their concerns.

"Meron kasing mga hinihiling din na bawat grupo magkaharap pero maliwanag naman sa lahat na ang presidente ang masusunod, so at sang-ayon naman lahat ng nandun kanina," he said.

[Translation: There are demands from each group but it is clear that the President will decide on these, and everyone agrees with this.]

As for plans in the 2019 midterm polls, Pimentel said Duterte said their party should search for "good candidates."

"The deadline is fast approaching. Sabi niya he's duty-bound to help the party's candidates. Huwag lang namin siya ipasubo na you know, involve pala sa drugs yung kandidato, we must have a very good screening process," he said.

Pimentel said Duterte wants “competent” and "honest" candidates to complete the roster of PDP-Laban candidates.
