Storm signal #1 over more areas as 'Samuel' moves closer to land

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, November 19) — More areas have been put under storm signal #1 as Tropical Depression Samuel moves closer to the country.

In its latest update, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said tropical cyclone warning signal 1 was up over the following areas:

Luzon

  • Masbate including Ticao Island

Visayas

  • Northern Samar
  • Samar
  • Eastern Samar
  • Biliran
  • Leyte
  • Southern Leyte
  • Bohol
  • Cebu
  • Siquijor
  • Negros Oriental
  • Negros Occidental
  • Aklan
  • Capiz
  • Antique
  • Iloilo
  • Guimaras

Mindanao

  • Surigao del Norte
  • Surigao del Sur
  • Agusan del Norte
  • Agusan del Sur
  • Dinagat Islands
  • Misamis Oriental
  • Camiguin

PAGASA said Samuel was 410 kilometers (km) northeast of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur, with maximum winds of 55 km per hour (kph) and gustiness of up to 65 kph.

Samuel is moving northwest at 20 kph.

The weather bureau said residents in affected areas should expect moderate to heavy rains which could trigger flooding and landslides.

They also advised to take precautionary measures, coordinate with local disaster risk reduction and management offices, and continue monitoring for updates.

Samuel is expected to make landfall over the Eastern Visayas-Caraga areas Tuesday evening, and may leave the country by Friday.
