Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, February 14) — Heads up, motorists!

The Tandang Sora flyover in Quezon City will be closed to traffic beginning February 23 to give way for the construction of the Metro Manila Rail Transit System (MRT) Line 7, the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) said Thursday.

MMDA General Manager Jojo Garcia said the closure will be "definite" and permanent-- as transport authorities seek solutions to traffic around Commonwealth Avenue.

"Hindi lang temporary 'to, kasi nga gagawan natin ng solusyon na mas mabilis. 'Yung Tandang Sora na 'yan, definitely hindi na rin matatawiran dahil yung MRT dadaan diyan," Garcia said in the MMDA media briefing.

[Translation: This won't be temporary, because we're looking for faster solutions for the traffic. That Tandang Sora flyover will definitely not be used because the MRT will pass by there.]

"They really have to close that intersection," he said.

Garcia said the closure will be in effect until 2020-- or until the MRT line construction is complete.

"Yung flyover po diyan at 'yung intersection sa ibaba, tatanggalin, isasara muna. Pag sinara to, dere-deretso na to hanggang 2020 - hanggang matapos ang MRT (7),"Garcia noted.

[Translation: The flyover and the intersection there will be closed. It will be closed until 2020-until the MRT (7) is done.]

"It's definite. Wag po tayong panghinaan ng loob na magsasara tayo diyan. This will be a permanent closure, kasi 'yung MRT dadaan diyan," he added.

[Translation: It's definite. I hope we don't get discouraged that we're closing this. This will be a permanent close, because the MRT will pass by there.]

Garcia said authorities are looking to put up a temporary U-Turn slot for motorists who will be affected by the closure.
