Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, May 15) — The nation's top defense official is in the hospital, but only for a medical checkup.

In a text message to reporters Wednesday night, Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana confirmed that he was confined at the Veterans Memorial Medical Center in Quezon City for an executive checkup, dispelling rumors that he had cardiac arrest.

"I am here at the Veterans undergoing executive checkup. I will be out in a day or two. Thank you for your concern," Lorenzana said. "I did not have a cardiac arrest. I was admitted for executive check up. I came here at the veterans hospital for some eye problems."

The 70-year-old defense secretary said he went to the hospital on Monday to have his eyes checked, but was advised to undergo stress-related tests.

This was confirmed by the Department of National Defense in a statement Thursday.

"The Secretary was also urged to take advantage of his stay in the hospital to briefly rest from his busy schedule brought about by preparations for the recently-concluded elections," the statement said.
