Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, August 5) — A magnitude-5.9 earthquake shook Malapatan town in Sarangani and other areas in southern Mindanao on Saturday morning.

The earthquake struck an area off Malapatan at around 8:30 a.m., the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

The earthquake was felt in various intensities in Mindanao.

Intensity V

  • Malapatan and Alabel, Sarangani

Intensity IV

  • Digos City
  • Kiamba, Sarangani

Intensity III

  • Davao City
  • Lebak, Sultan Kudarat

Instrumental Intensity V was also recorded in General Santos City, I in Zamboanga City.

Phivolcs said the quake was tectonic in origin and had a depth of 70 km.

"The shaking was not so severe compared if the earthquake was shallow," Phivolcs Director Renato Solidum told CNN Philippines.

He said the earthquake, which Phivolcs considers as "moderately strong" is "most likely (to cause) small aftershocks."

It earlier reported an earthquake with a weaker 5.4-magnitude at 8:39 a.m. The latest advisory was issued at 9:01 a.m.
