Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, December 26) — Four members of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) were killed, while five others were wounded by military airstrikes on Christmas Day.

The operation was in response to the BIFF's attack on an ethnic community in Sitio Makon, Barangay Iginampong in Datu Unsay town, Maguindanao, said Sixth Infantry Division spokesperson, Captain John Arvin Encinas.

The BIFF reportedly burned two houses on Monday.

Residents fled to another sitio and reported the incident to the nearest army detachment, the military said.

The government tagged the BIFF as among ISIS-inspired groups.

President Rodrigo Duterte mentioned the BIFF among threat groups in Mindanao in his request for Congress to allow the extension of martial law in the island group until December 31, 2018.

Congress approved the request on December 13.
