Zamboanga City (CNN Philippines, December 26) — A police officer and a civilian were injured in a grenade explosion at the residence of a trial court judge in Zamboanga City Tuesday morning.

Senior Police Officer 1 Osbert Fernando and Antonio Dela Cruz were injured after Dela Cruz activated a grenade during an argument in Barangay Tetuan, Police Regional Office-9 Spokesperson Chief Inspector Helen Galvez said.

The incident reportedly ensued following a two-day altercation between Dela Cruz and his wife Magdalena, a helper at the house of Zamboanga City Judge Ernesto Rosario.

After a heated exchange with his wife, Dela Cruz went home and returned to the Rosario household with a live grenade.

He threatened to hurl the grenade and asked Rosario's neighbor SPO1 Osbert Fernando, who was trying to mediate, to get out of the way.

The grenade exploded prematurely while Dela Cruz was holding it. It cut off his right hand.

Fernando and the judge were hit by shrapnel.

Dela Cruz is facing frustrated murder charges and illegal possession of explosives.
