  • The Philippines defeated Kazakhstan in straight sets, 25-19, 25-11, 28-26, on Saturday (May 2) to advance to the next round of the Asian U23 Volleyball Championship. Alyssa Valdez scored 19 points with 16 attacks and 3 service aces.

(CNN Philippines) — In a must win game, the Philippines took advantage of a lackluster Kazakhstan side and swept the match in three sets to advance to the next round of the Asian U23 Women's Volleyball Championship.

Still nursing a right hand injury sustained in their first game, captain Alyssa Valdez led a spirited Filipina side against Yana Yagodina and Kazakhstan to earn a 25-19, 25-11, 28-26 victory.

The Kazakhstan side took the lead early on before a fight back by the home team that took the first set 25-19.

In the second set, the Filipinas never relented as they pressured the Kazakhs to run away with the set with a scoreline of 25-11.

With their back against the wall, Yagodina inspired the Kazakhs to keep the scores close at the start of the third set before the Philippines started to pull away.

The Filipinos had a chance to take the match at 24-19 but the visitors fought back and scored 6 straight points to lead 25-24.

After a back and forth affair at the end of the third set, Alyja Santiago took charge in the end and sealed it for the Philippines at 28-26.

But it was Alyssa Valdez again who led the Philippines with her 19 points with three service aces.

The performance of the host country was remarkable considering the error-laden first outing against Iran as the team committed only 11 errors today against Kazakhstan.

This victory allows the Philippines to move on to the next round of the competition and will play against a to be determined opponent on Monday (May 4) at the PhilSports Arena.
