James Yap opened the 2017 PBA Commissioner's Cup in explosive fashion for the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters.

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines) — Former Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) MVP James Yap is starting to shine for the Elasto Painters.

A reinvigorated Yap came away with the 2017 Commissioner's Cup first PBA Press Corps Player of the Week award after leading Rain or Shine to consecutive victories against the NLEX Road Warriors and the Mahindra Floodbuster.

Yap ended the week with per game averages of 19 points and three rebounds for the period of March 17 through 19.

The 35-year old swingman put up 26 points, his best scoring outing in the past three years, to grab a 113-105 win in the conference opener against NLEX. Yap waxed hot from three-point land, sinking five three-pointers to down the Road Warriors.

Two days later, Yap once again caught fire from behind the arc to chip in with 12 points with a trifecta of three pointers in the 99-95 overtime win over Mahindra.

According to Rain or Shine coach Caloy Garcia, Yap's return to form is a result of good health.

“I felt last conference, his (Yap) knee wasn’t that good pa, pero nung offseason medyo maganda takbo niya sa practice,” Garcia said of the former MVP. “He comes early, shoots the ball, nagda-dunk pa sa practice to show he’s healthy.”

The defending Commissioner's Cup champions Rain or Shine returns to action next Sunday when they go toe-to-toe with the Blackwater Elite at the Ynares Center in Antipolo.
