(CNN Philippines, June 19) — The Philippines opened its International Basketball Federation (FIBA) 3x3 World Cup 2017 campaign with a gutsy victory over Romania, 21-15, on Monday in Nantes, France.

Trailing by one midway in the game, Kobe Paras and Kiefer anchored a rally to lead team Philippines to the stunning win against the higher-seeded opponent.

Romania is seeded seventh, while the Philippines is ranked 18th.

In its second match, the Philippines suffered a beating from host country France, 22-11.

It was a close contest early in the match, but the French squad's height advantage helped them pull away and grab the win.

France sits atop the standings in Group B with an unblemished record after completing another convincing triumph over El Salvador.

Slovenia takes the second spot following a win against El Salvador and Romania.

The Philippines, meanwhile, is at third place with a 1-1 win-loss slate.

The Filipinos return to the hardcourt court Tuesday when it go up against second-seed Slovenia at 1:40 a.m. and winless El Salvador at 3 a.m. (Manila time).

The top two squads in each group will earn a ticket to the quarterfinals.
