(CNN Philippines, August 10) — Wednesday night was supposed to be another typical event for Filipino sports fans.

But three local squads made it more than the usual.

With sports fans glued to their TV sets, cellphones, laptops, and radios - Gilas Pilipinas, the Philippine women's volleyball team, and Ceres-Negros delivered victories that left a mark to their supporters.

Netizens were on a high after all squads won in their respective fields.

PAYBACK TIME FOR GILAS

Recent memory tells us that China is a major roadblocks to the Philippines' quest for basketball supremacy.

An example of which was the 2015 FIBA Asia Championship where China denied the Philippines' chance of capturing the title in an emotional match.

So going up against China is literally and figuratively a tall order.

Fast forward to Wednesday night's FIBA Asia Cup held in Lebanon, an undermanned Filipino side finally struck back to their tormentors.

Lethal scorer Terrence Romeo led a late-charge for Gilas Pilipinas as they stunned China in their opening game.

SMASHING INITIAL EXPECTATIONS

Training for less than month is clearly not ideal for any team who wants to be successful, but the Philippine women's volleyball team showed they can still bear fruit with determination.

Amid the doubts surrounding the squad, the Filipinas worked hard and let the result speak for itself.

The Philippine women's volleyball team swept Hong Kong to claim its first victory in the Asian Senior Women's Volleyball Championship at the Alonte Sports Arena in Biñan, Laguna.

Alyssa Valdez was in her usual groove and carried the Philippines with 14 markers.

CERES CROWNED ASEAN CHAMPIONS

Ironically, the least talked about of the three victories was Ceres' triumph in Bacolod.

Ceres-Negros made history for Philippine club football, extending their historic run in the 2017 AFC Cup.

While Gilas and the women's volleyball team scored important victories to open their respective tournaments, the Busmen of Bacolod ensured their campaign continued and were crowned kings of ASEAN in the process.

After their triumph against Home United, the Philippine-based squad will represent the region in the inter-zone semifinals against Istiklol of Tajikistan.

The Filipinos return to action in the AFC Cup on August 22.
