Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, December 2) — School spirit was very much alive on Saturday as the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Cheerdance Competition (CDC) dominated social media.

#UAAPCDC2017 was the top trending topic on Twitter, as hosts Nikko Ramos and Gretchen Ho, along with the courtside reporters, opened the one-day annual event at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

First to perform were the defending champions, the National University (NU) Pep Squad. Their #AllOutOn5 sea-inspired routine wowed the crowd, although netizens were less forgiving on their few tumbles.

Next up were the De La Salle University (DLSU) Animo Squad, whose #JapANIMO themed performance drew mixed reactions due to their clean yet “safe” execution.

The Adamson University (AdU) Pep Squad impressed with their #80sFor80 routine. Netizens praised the nearly flawless act, as the crew was keen on improving on last year’s third place finish.

The Far Eastern University (FEU) Cheering Squad, with their #FourElementsUnite act, swayed the audience with their thrilling routine, despite a fall in one of their formations.

Many netizens were dazzled by the #UnExpected and #UltimatE routine of the University of the East (UE) Pep Squad.

Not to be outshined were the returning University of the Philippines (UP) Pep Squad, whose anticipated #KwentongIsko performance was touted to redeem the crew after a one-year hiatus.

#ParaSaUSTe also trended, as the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Salinggawi Dance Troupe aimed to lift their school spirit after a heartbreaking win-loss record by their basketball team.

The Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) Blue Babble Battalion capped off the main competition with their #JuanBigFight and #SayawOBF routine.

The group stunts competition followed, with five-member teams from the NU, DLSU, AdU, FEU, UE, and UP squads making the most of their minute-long performances.
