Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, December 3) — It's a blue night for De La Salle University.

On Sunday, the Taft school lit up one of its buildings blue after losing the UAAP Season 80 men’s basketball tournament to arch rival Ateneo de Manila University.

The Blue Eagles beat the Green Archers, 88-86, in the hotly contested Game 3 of the men's seniors finals at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.

The generations-old rivalry between the two schools had spilled over from the time both were members of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).

But unlike several years ago when fights would commonly erupt between players and fans during and after an Ateneo-La Salle game, the rivalry has matured to just basketball competition.

In an August 2009 game, the storied rivalry even took a back seat as both teams shed their respective school colors and wore yellow to pay their respects to the late President Corazon Aquino.

Photos and videos of the St. La Salle Hall in their rival school's colors circulated on social media.

Netizens responded positively to the Green Archer's gesture of sportsmanship.

Ateneo's win marks the university's ninth championship since joining the collegiate league in 1978.
