Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, January 4) — Alab Pilipinas started the year off on the right note after beating the Westports Malaysia Dragons, 90-79, Wednesday at the Filoil Flying V Centre.

Justin Brownlee had a stellar ABL debut as he showed the way for Alab Pilipinas with 29 points, eight assists, and seven rebounds.

Alab dictated the tempo of the game to establish a 23-13 advantage at the end of the opening period.

With Joshua Munzon leading a mini rally, Westports was able to climb back within striking distance.

But Alab kept the Dragons at bay to keep the edge at the halftime break.

Westports unleashed a 31-point outburst to slice the deficit heading into the payoff quarter.

Anchored by a 13-3 start, Alab pulled away and never looked back to snag its second win in five outings.

Another newcomer Renaldo Balkman chipped in 17 points and 11 rebounds for Alab.

Munzon tallied 21 points and nine rebounds for the Dragons who suffered their third setback.

Alab will next face the Singapore Slingers on January 7, while Westports collide with Mono Vampire on January 12.
