Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, February 9) — The 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics officially opened Friday, and aside from the two Filipino athletes competing for gold, a local celebrity also attended the opening ceremony.

South Korean actor Ryan Bang, who has been a comedian and television star in the Philippines since 2010, rode a hot air balloon to pass the flame.

The torch relay began its 100-day countdown to the Winter Olympics on November 1 when it arrived in South Korea. Greek skier Apostolos Angelis was its first bearer.

This year's Winter Olympics is hosted by South Korea for the first time in history. Nearly 3,000 athletes from 93 countries will be competing in more than 100 medal events.

Filipino figure skater Michael Martinez and Filipino-American Alpine skier Asa Miller are competing for the Philippines in their sport.

The Winter Olympics will run on February 9 to 25.
