Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, June 27) — Filipino athletes got a major boost after San Miguel Corporation (SMC) donated ₱50 million to the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC).

POC President Ricky Vargas and Secretary-General Patrick Gregorio received the donation Wednesday at the SMC office in Pasig City.

"I was pleasantly shocked and momentarily speechless," said Vargas. "We really didn't expect this. The ₱20M was already generous, but the additional ₱30M really highlights the commitment of San Miguel and Mr. Ang to Philippine sports. I am beyond grateful."

In a statement San Miguel Sports Director Alfrancis Chua said SMC trusts in the talents of the local athletes. He added that sports is a vital piece in a country's progress.

"San Miguel Corporation believes in the Filipino athlete. Ramon Ang's passion for sports has been there from the very beginning." he said. "From the ₱20M we initially committed a few weeks back, Boss RSA added ₱30M more on the spot today out of his own generosity. This is because SMC truly believes that sports play an integral role in nation building."

The Philippines will have its hands full in the coming months starting with the 2018 Asian Games which will run from August 18 to September 2 in Jakarta, Indonesia and as host of the 2019 Southeast Asian Games.
