Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, September 3) — In its quest to hold quality games, the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) will be using an exclusive group of referees in Season 81.

New UAAP commissioner Junel Baculi revealed it in a press conference Monday.

"They cannot officiate in other leagues even if we suspend them - if ever there will be a suspension, they stay here. Every game they will be at the venue except if there will be split venues" he said.

Baculi was worried budget might be an obstacle, but the UAAP managing directors and board of trustees fortunately were on board with the idea.

"The budget will be a major obstacle in formulating this idea to be a reality," he said.

"I asked the (UAAP) president, Mr. Nilo Ocampo, to present it to the managing directors and eventually to the board of trustees. We got the approval," he added.

The process of selecting the game officials happened three weeks ago. The UAAP will have over 20 referees at its disposal.

"We have gotten 25 referees to handle all our basketball games."

UAAP Season 81 begins on September 8 at the MOA Arena in Pasay City.
