Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, September 8) — The National University (NU) Bulldogs asserted their mastery of University of Santo Tomas (UST) Growling Tigers, 75-70, Saturday at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

Brothers Dave and Shaun Ildefonso paved the way for the Bulldogs with 19 points and seven rebounds, and 10 points and 11 rebounds, respectively.

It was a nip-and-tuck affair as both teams engaged in an early slugfest.

A late 10-3 run by NU, however, carried them to a five-point advantage at the halftime break.

With tremendous effort on the defensive end, the Bulldogs limited the Growling Tigers to score a single digit in the third frame.

As UST tried to slowly climb back, NU got timely breaks to protect the lead midway in the fourth period.

Despite a 33-point outburst by the Growling Tigers, the Bulldogs built an insurmountable edge to notch the first victory in the men's seniors basketball tournament.

NU will next tackle the University of the East Red Warriors on September 16 at the Fil Oil Arena, while UST will face the Far Eastern University Tamaraws on September 12 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
