Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, September 12) — The University of Santo Tomas (UST) Growling Tigers escaped the Far Eastern University (FEU) Tamaraws, 76-74, Wednesday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.

Renzo Subido led the way for UST with 18 points and two rebounds.

The Tamaraws secured a precarious two-point edge at the end of the opening quarter.

It was the second unit who helped the Growling Tigers protect the lead going into the halftime break.

UST continued to ride on the momentum and keep FEU at bay in the entire third period.

With the Tamaraws threatening to stage a comeback, Germy Mahinay and Ken Zamora scored two straight buckets to give the Growling Tigers breathing room at the crucial stretch of the match.

FEU's last-ditch effort came after Hubert Cani nailed a cold-blooded three-point shot to cut the deficit to two points with 11 seconds left in the game.

Big man Prince Orizu paced the Tamaraws with 25 points and 15 rebounds.

Veteran guard Marvin Lee added 13 markers and four assists for UST, which snapped a five-game losing skid against FEU in the men's seniors basketball tournament.

The Growling Tigers will go up against the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons on September 16 at the Fil Oil Arena, while the Tamaraws clash with the Ateneo Blue Eagles on September 15 at the Big Dome.
