PH's Team Lakay wins big at 2018 Global Martial Arts Awards

(CNN Philippines, November 9) — Fighters from Team Lakay brought honor to the country after dominating the 2018 Global Martial Arts Awards.

Members of the martial arts group based in Baguio City took home four major awards Thursday in Singapore.

Eduard Folayang was named Martial Arts Hero of the Year following a pair of victories and earning a shot for the vacant ONE Lightweight world championship title against Singapore Amir Khan happening in Manila on November 23.

Team Lakay, meanwhile, was hailed as Gym of the Year after producing three world champions in 2018 - Geje Eustaquio (ONE Flyweight), Joshua Pacio (ONE Strawweight), and Kevin Belingon (ONE Interim Bantamweight).

For mentoring the breakthrough season of Team Lakay, Mark Sangiao was recognized with the Coach of the Year.

Joshua Pacio's impressive first-round submission win against Pongsiri Mitsatit landed him the Submission of the Year citation.

  • Walkout of the Year: Andy Nguyen
  • Referee of the Year: Olivier Coste
  • Breakthrough Athlete of the Year: Stamp Fairtex
