Comelec signs deals with Smartmatic, SLI Global Solutions

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines) — The Commission on Elections (Comelec) signed the final contract with Smartmatic worth P1.7 billion to lease 23,000 vote counting machines on Thursday (August 27).

That means Smartmatic can now start manufacturing the machines.

The COMELEC also officially awarded another project to Smartmatic to lease a larger set of 71,000 machines.

The poll body is leasing about 94,000 new machines for next year's elections.

Meanwhile, the COMELEC has signed on U.S.-based IT company SLI Global Solutions to certify the source code for these machines.

SLI will be paid P35 million to scrutinize and test the source code which is the blueprint of the software running the machines.

Certification helps make sure the machines will count votes accurately and to protect the system from hacking.
