More islands, more fun in PH

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines) — There are more islands in the Philippines than was previously thought.

On Friday evening (February 19), Environment Secretary Ramon Paje spoke with CNN Philippines chief correspondent Pia Hontiveros about the revelation that the country had more than 7,107 islands.

As of the latest count, there were actually 7,641 Philippines Islands, as shown by the Philippine Islands Measurements Project, a special project conducted by the National Mapping and Resource Information Authority (NAMRIA).

That's 534 islands more than what was previously known.

According to Paje, "We call them 'new.' Some of the islands were not on the map before."

Paje said three reasons were likely behind the discovery:

  • Old technology probably was unable to detect the land masses
  • It could be due to changing land forms
  • The improved detection of islands through the use of high-resolution data

Paje added the Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar, or the high-resolution mapping, was completed last year and a new map including the "new" islands and islets will be released.
