Two PH coffee firms win international contest in Milan

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, November 5) — Two Philippine coffee firms were recognized in an international competition in Milan, Italy.

The Mirabueno Coffee from the province of Bukidnon received the Gourmet Award (puissant doux category) while the SGD Coffee from Northern Sagada bagged Bronze Award (rond equilibre category) during the 5th International Contest of Locally Roasted Coffees by the Agence pour la Valorisation des Produits Agricoles (AVPA) last Oct. 21.

The Mirabueno and SGD coffee are part of The Coffee Heritage Project, non-profit private initiative which takes "quality-focused approaches in coffee production."

Chargé d'Affaires Mersole J. Mellejor of the Philippine Consul General's Office in Milan received the award on behalf of TCHP.

Around 700 coffee producers from the around globe participate in AVPA contests annually.

The Sagada Coffee won its first Gourmet Award in the 3rd AVPA Awards in 2017.

AVPA is a Paris-based "non-governmental, non-profit organization, mainly composed of producers and taste enthusiasts. The association's goal is to enhance the value of agricultural products and to recognize the excellence of some producers, too often forgotten in the midst of mass marketing."

Other participating countries in the competition were Peru, Colombia, Mexico, Brazil, Honduras, Guatemala,Ecuador,Indonesia,Laos, Nepal, Thailand, Vietnam, Ethiopia, Cameroon, Gabon, Ivory Coast, Tanzania, Togo, Puerto Rico, and Hawaii.
