Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, August 13)— Dance crew UPeepz made sure to showcase Filipino culture and identity on the global stage when it competed in the semifinal round of American dance competition “World of Dance.”

From the song choice, the costumes, and the dance itself— UPeepz poured in several local influences during the performance aired on Tuesday (Wednesday in Manila).

The group grooved to the tune of “Bebot” by the Black Eyed Peas, and incorporated elements of local folk dances such as tinikling in the one-minute routine.

The panel of judges— singer-actress Jennifer Lopez, singer NeYo, and dancer-choreographer Derek Hough— commended the group for the passion and personality reflected in the performance.

“I just feel your passion for dance so much and I love the fact that you brought in your culture into this piece,” Hough said after UPeepz’ performance.

Judge NeYo also gave the group a shoutout on social media, as he shared a clip of the performance and captioned it with “Pagmamahal, UPeepz.”

UPeepz— a two-time World Hip Hop Dance Champion— tallied an average score of 89 from the judges.
