Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, June 10) -- The Miss Universe Philippines organization announced on Monday that there will be no minimum height requirement for aspiring candidates this year.

The applicants should be 18 to 28 years old at the time of the pageant and have never been married or given birth. The local pageant also requires that applicants must be a Filipino citizen and a Philippine passport holder.

The news was lauded by fans and even by Miss Australia Maria Thattil, who managed to make it to the top 10 of the recent Miss Universe pageant despite standing at only 5’3”.

“Miss Universe is a powerful global ambassador. All the delegates are too, and have the opportunity to ignite global change for good. Look at me -– 5'3, I did exactly that. And I did it as the shortest candidate in my cohort,” she said in an Instagram post.

The shortest winners in history were Miss Universe 1958, Colombia's Luz Marina Zuluaga, and Miss Universe 1965, Thailand's Apasra Hongsakula, both at 162 cms or around 5’3”.

The deadline for application for Miss Universe Philippines will be on June 24.

There’s no date yet on the coronation night of the local pageant, but it was reported that the 70th Miss Universe pageant could happen in December this year.
