Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, October 13) — The Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) wants all malls to adjust operating hours starting next month, in anticipation of heavier traffic because of the holidays.

MMDA traffic chief Bong Nebrija said they decided to go beyond talking to operators of malls located along EDSA since heavy traffic is also experienced along other major roads in Metro Manila where there are malls, such as C-5, Commonwealth Avenue and Katipunan Avenue.

Nebrija said the MMDA and all mall operators will meet next month to talk about the agency’s proposal to move operating hours to 11 a.m. and to refrain from holding sales during the weekdays to avoid creating traffic bottlenecks.

MMDA data showed that the volume of vehicles in Metro Manila usually increases by 15 percent to 20 percent beginning November and lasts until January.

Based on MMDA data, Nebrija sees the number of vehicles in Metro Manila to swell to 480,000 daily during the holiday season.

Mall operators adjusted their operating hours to the suggested time from November 5 last year to January 14, 2019.
