Mayor Vico Sotto ordered the closure of a meat processing plant in Pasig City for failing to set up a sewerage treatment facility.

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, October 8) – Mayor Vico Sotto ordered the closure of a meat processing plant in Pasig City for failing to set up a sewerage treatment facility.

Sotto said the plant in Bagong Ilog has long been discharging waste water, mostly with pig’s blood, to a drainage system, which connects to Pasig River and Manila Bay.

Sotto said, “Kasalanan ng mga plantang tulad nito.”

[Translation: [Meat-processing] plants like this are a mistake.]

The mayor also noted that the plant has had no sewerage treatment plant for 12 years.

Mayor Sotto has also ordered an investigation against the city inspectors, who approved the plant's sanitary permit in September last year.

Philippine Clean Water Act of 2004 prohibits the dumping of untreated waste into a water body.
