Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, December 4) — The House of Representatives on Wednesday approved on final reading the bills that would add Walingwaling and Balangay to the list of national symbols.

Voting 169-0-0, House Bill No. 4952 got a final nod from the chamber. The bill seeks to recognize Walingwaling (scientific name: Vanda Sanderiana) as the national orchid of the country.

Further, the bill also aims for the “conservation, protection, and promotion” of the said flower.

The House also approved on final reading House Bill No. 4953, with 170-0-0 votes, which seeks to declare Balangay as the Philippine national boat.

According to the bill, Balangay “is a testament to the early Filipino’s boatbuilding genius and seafaring expertise.”

Balangay was used by Filipinos for seafaring as early as pre-colonial period.
